The basic geography of chocolate

The cocoa tree originally was found in the rainforests of South America. It was cultivated and harvested there for many years. Chocolate then began to spread around different countries by means of boats. The country that was growing the most cocoa trees was Brazil until the 1990s, when a form of blight hit. The blight caused severe damage and brazil no longer had the highest cocoa tree population.

Sweet or sour

Originally chocolate was used in savoury dishes. It wasn't until recently that chocolate became a sweet food. Nowadays people over indulge in chocolate and eat it constantly and never would have thought that it wasnt eaten as a luxury.

Where chocolate is made?

Chocolate is mainly made in huge factories. The chocolate is processed and made in massive amounts. In these big factories there are machines that do everything from roasting the beans to mixing the chocolate mixture together. In saying that some chocolate is made completely by hand. This chocolate tends to be a lot more expensive than other chocolate that is processed in factories but is said to have a better taste.

How cocoa beans are grown

Cocoa beans come from cacao trees. The cacao trees are grown near the equater due to the warm climate and the damp conditions. The trees only grow when they are protected from the sunlight, otherwise they get damaged and die. Once the trees have good conditions they begin to bear some fruits. These fruits or pods are shaped like an oval and are about ten inches in length. Each pod usually has between twenty to sixty beans. These beans are the main content of chocolate. The pods are cut off and the beans are harvested and then they are left to ripen for up to eight days. After the beans have rested for a while they then are spread out and dried before being shipped out to foreign countries.
